Sfumato is essentially the blurred outline, the form left vague, as though disappearing into a shadow, softened colors that allow one form to merge into another. Since expression rests mainly in two features: the corners of the mouth, and the corners of the eyes, these were left deliberately indistinct by da Vinci. That is why we are never quite certain in what mood Mona Lisa is really looking at us. Additionally, notice the two sides of the background do not quite match. Also noteworthy is that many details are not visible today because of partial damage or restoration paint.
