In 1888 van Gogh moved to southern France, where, under the burning sun of Provence, he painted scenes of the fields, cypress trees, peasants, and rustic life characteristics of the region. At this time his palette becomes increasingly vibrant. While living at Arles, he began using swirling brush strokes and intense yellows, greens, and blues.
