Worn down by his activities in Paris, Vincent van Gogh left for Provence in the south of France. Hoping to establish an artists' cooperative, he rented a studio in Arles known as the 'Yellow House' and invited Gauguin to join him. In anticipation of his arrival, Vincent painted sunflowers to decorate Gauguin's room. Described as 'completely Vincent' by Gauguin, the flowers represent the sun, the dominant feature of the Provencal summer.
Voluntarily confined to the asylum in Saint-Rimy May 1889-May 1890, this period would prove to be one of van Gogh's most creative as an artist. Painted in May 1889, Irises is vibrant in color and energy. Initially confined to the asylum grounds, Vincent painted the world seen from his room, deleting the bars that obscured his view. In the asylum's walled garden he painted irises, lilacs, and ivy-covered trees.
Although subject to intermittent attacks, van Gogh produced 150 paintings, including some of the most significant of his career, during his stay at Saint-Rimy.
