Artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela of Finland embraced the simplified shapes and exaggerated colors of Gauguin as his painting style. He painted Lake Keitele in 1904, in an exploration of Finnish culture and history. The greyish bands that streak across the lake are said to be made by the wake of the boat of a mythic Finnish hero.
